| Animal Kingdom |
Disney's foray into zoo life is certainly entertaining, but it may not be the animal adventure you were hoping for when you first walked through the gates. Disney excels, as usual, at mixing entertainment with education; visitors to Animal Kingdom will learn all about mammals, birds, reptiles, and more through different shows, exhibits, and the occasional (there are not that many) thrill rides. But when it comes to getting up close and personal with the animals, Disney's Animal Kingdom's got nothing on the zoo. The animals here are generally kept far away from the visitors, and although this theme park does feature a good amount of the world's favorite critters, it just doesn't have the same feel as the educational, but not so sing-songy zoo.
What Animal Kingdom does offer is some excellent exhibits on dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. Dinoland USA gives kids and adults the chance to play paleontologist, discovering different fossils and bone structures while learning more about the creatures to whom they belonged. Visitors can watch the preparation of the largest Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil ever found, and the collection of dinosaur skeletons is very impressive considering they belong to a theme park rather than a museum.
Animal Kingdom can really be fun if you approach it with the right state of mind. If you want to learn a bunch of songs and hear a few jokes about the animals of the Earth, then you will certainly enjoy it here. And despite the lighthearted approach that Disney takes to education, your kids will still learn a great deal about the animals that roam the globe. But if you really want to see live animals and get a good look at both them and their "natural" habitats, the zoo is probably a better bet for you. Time permitting, you could, of course, always do both. At least with Disney's theme park your price of admission allows you to go back and forth between attractions so you can see animals and fairy tales all in the same day. |
